I bought a small pot of basil 10 days ago at local Smart & Final. I enjoy fresh basil on my pasta and tomatoes. I eat tomatoes at work as a snack. I sprinkle some freshly chopped basil on my tomato. They taste so fresh.
But my plant is dying rather quickly. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
I give 1/2 inch of water. And I leave the pot where I get partial Sunlight.
I thought I would enjoy fresh basil from this pot forever. I am going to buy another pot and give it another try. I would like to figure out how to keep them alive for a long time. Maybe I don’t live in the right climate? I don’t know. I must find out.

Re: Fresh Basil Plant Mystery
I don’t think Basil is a swamp plant, so it shouldn’t sit in a glass with it’s “feet” permanently wet. Just a saucer underneath to catch extra water when watering should be fine. And then just water once a day if the soil doesn’t feel wet. If it’s too wet skip the watering, but check every day.
I personally prefer clay pots, the roots and the soil can breath better in them. If you divide you next purchase like one commenter said, you could try one of them in a clay pot the other in plastic.
Good luck
Re: Fresh Basil Plant Mystery
Thank you. I get a better mental picture now.
I would love to have steady supply of fresh basil.
I agree with clay pot on a saucer (now that I read your post).
It was stupid that I kept the original mini pot.
I would like to figure this out.
Re: Fresh Basil Plant Mystery
i’m getting bored of watching santa and your candle. Can we watch you basil plant instead? It will be more interesting.
Re: Fresh Basil Plant Mystery
haha 🙂
My basil plant is sitting outside, dying. It’s not easy to set up camera outside.
But, you gave me some idea. I think it is possible to point camera to outside. But, pointing at candle is the easiest.
Maybe I will change things up now and then. But, I am always worried about my privacy. At stickam account, I wrote that I live in England just to throw people off.
Anyway, I just discovered stickam (free live video service). So, I just turned it on, he. 🙂

There is a reason why I show candles. I happened to know that some visitors are candle lovers. That’s why…
Re: Fresh Basil Plant Mystery
When you buy your second pot of basil…. You should divide it into about three pots- it’s way too crowded. If possible put it outside in full sun- if it’s warm out. I find it hard to grow basil in pots. So now I only grow it outside in the summer and it’s super full and almost four feet tall, One day I picked only 1/4 of my plants and then only about half of their full height and got an entire laundry basket full.
Re: Fresh Basil Plant Mystery
Thank you very much for letting me know. Your information is gold. Also, this is discouraging, because I may not have an ideal setting to grow basil. I don’t get full Sun at my apartment. 🙂
I’m going to research more. I wish to give it one more try.
Thank you for taking time to write me.
