Update: Costco lunch boxes recalled for leaky cold gel packs (Jan 24, 2012)

With a $2.00 coupon, this lunch box was only $9.99.
Inside the box, I found a shoulder strap, aluminum water bottle, and a reusable ice pack. The bag is insulated for hot/cold food.
PS. The coupon is now expired. But $11.99 is still a very good price.
PPS. (added July 28, 2010) – It’s been about a month now. I’ve been carrying this lunch box every day to carry stuff around (backup hard drives, camera, notepad, sunglasses, business cards, & more…). I love this lunch box. Even my cool coworker complimented it.

I bought mine around the time the 2nd wave of them came out at Costco. Apparently it was the 1st wave that had the toxic gel pack issue. They’re great for adults to take their lunch/snacks to work too. I took the bungee off and use that for my Camelbak insulated water bottle. It’s so much easier to take out and put back in again that way. I’ve used the front part for some papers or crackers and such similar items. Only wish there was a open pocket in the back part.
I don’t think California Innovations are producing any more of these CI Sport lunch boxes. It’s a shame. Mine is getting rather worn and would like to replace it. I’ve checked around and don’t see any thing resembling them. I haven’t been able to find anything anywhere else that I would like. They’re either too big or too small and/or don’t have the same features that I’d like.

had the same problem with our lunch box..one side of the handle ripped right off. Tried to go to the link that John had given but it’s no longer a valid link. Any way you can give me the new one? We’ve only used the lunch box for a couple months, definitely like it otherwise, but feel like it should have held up through a bit more wear and tear considering lunch boxes are often geared to be carried by possible rough-and-tough kids!! =)

I bought this yesterday at a costco in VA, i like it so far, much better than his pottery barn lunch box that fell apart. I packed him lunch today for camp and he was excited about it

I just bought one of these yesterday at the Brooklyn, NY Costco. They had a ton of these in the front. I didn’t see the other version with the compartment on the bottom.
Too bad the coupon expired yesterday. My husband said I should have bought another one for him.

I’m looking for the old one too but our Costcos in Reno, Sparks and Carson City, Nevada only have the new one with the bottom compartment. 🙁

I have checked everywhere! no item 508308 to be found. My 2 sons use these everyday and they held up well. I was just trying to get a hold of 2 new ones for them for school this year. Please does anyone know where to get these?

No luck finding 508308 here also (Oxnard, CA).
That 2 compartment design is not practical (to me).
I don’t like it.
I went to Costco yesterday. I was hoping to buy 1 or 2 lunch bags so I can give away to my website visitors. No, I couldn’t find it. I only saw the ugly ones.

My two sons (2 and 4) used these lunch boxes every day at preschool for a year and they held up well. The plastic liner unzipped easily to be washed. Our local Austin, TX Costcos only have the 566755 model which won’t work. I wish we could find that other model too.

I bought one last summer and want another one for my daughter. They have a coupon out now, but the only style in my are – NC is item #566755 – it is not the same and I really would like item #508308 – anyone see one lately? I like the original one and think it will work better than the new style that has a bottom compartment.

Great lunchboxes, but handle broke and can’t find these anymore
I bought two for my twins. One of the handles detached on one side of one of them (who knows what my son did to the poor thing), so I went back to Costco, and they are all gone. None on-line either. What a bummer. I will ask my fix-it hubby to glue it back together. These are really great otherwise!

Same thing happened to my son’s lunchbag as well. I have 3 of these – yes 3 kids// twins + singleton.
We’ll see if they replace it.
I figured glueing it probably won’t fix it.

What is the water bottle made of? It says ‘made in China’, but has no info on the metal(s) used…

mm… I don’t know.
I don’t use that bottle for that reason.
I don’t know if the bottle cap contains funky chemical or not.

I agree. Just bought two yesterday at Costco. I’m very impressed with the value for the $12 it cost. I’m thinking about getting one or two more my next trip for my kids / as gifts.

Shoot, I trashed my lunch box because I wore it out. I could have gotten my money back.
So, the bag is good. It’s the gel pack that we should stop using.

I guess not all freezer packs are toxic. Costco still sells those lunch boxes. So, we must research to find out if you have a toxic gel pack or not. What a hassle. Thanks for the info.
