I’ve heard about paper straws on news media, but this was the first time seeing them in person. As I was dressing my hot dog, I heard people talking about the paper straws. They were basically saying “Oh, paper straws”
The straw was narrower than the normal plastic straws that I am used to. I would prefer wider straws, but that’s an American gripe (one of the reasons why some people hate Americans). Paper straws are just fine. I enjoyed my hot dog.
After my hot dog lunch, I filled my soda cup with water and came back to work. I drank that water rest of the day using the same paper straw. The straw held up nicely.
Update (January 14, 2020): After reading some of the comments, I paid close attention to the straws on my next few visits to Costco food court. And I can tell you with no hesitation that I absolutely enjoy using these paper straws at Costco. Again, maybe it’s because I was poor all my life. Maybe I am just not sensitive to taste and smell. Whatever the reason may be, I am happy with these paper straws at Costco food court. But it is also important to hear from people who don’t like these straws. Because maybe I am the minority in this opinion poll.
I like the paper straws at Costco but wasn’t able to purchase any where can you purchase them?
Sorry, I don’t know where to buy those particular straws.
There are paper straws everywhere including Walmart. But, I don’t know their quality (smell, fall apart easily…). Maybe you can try the cheapest ones, and go from there. Sorry, I don’t have a clear answer.
When I was little all we had were paper straws. I used a Costco paper straw for the first time today. I was glad to see that it was not plastic and, through three refills, I found absolutely no impact on the taste of what I was drinking and did not discern any taste of the straw itself. A good, sturdy straw. Other places should follow suit. Thanks Costco ! And thanks John for your post.
Thank you. It’s nice to have your input.
Onviously you haven’t tried a mocha freeze w these ridiculous Straws. It literally falls apart at the middle where the plastic lid is. Ended up throwing the drink away. Not all of us appreciate a stupid paper straw
I hate paper straws. Hate is maybe not a strong enough word actually – I carry silicone straws with me, but I forgot them and used the paper straw at Costco and was amazed that I didn’t hate them. They were significantly thicker and harder than any other paper straw I had received anywhere else, and it withstood two refills and about two hours later they still held their shape (although a bit waterlogged) didn’t notice any flavors either or weird mouth feel. So these are the first decent paper straws I have seen around.
Oh, good to know. Thank you for your input. It gives me a better idea.
Apparently, you have completely lost your taste. After just few seconds these awful straws taste like newspaper in your mouth.
If Costco were smart, they would use PLA plastic made straws which are made from plants and are biodegradable.
These paper steaws are absolutely horrible!!!
I didn’t lose taste. I was poor all my life. I probably wouldn’t mind if the straws were made out of actual newspapers.
Anyway, you do have a valid point. I can see a lot of people may agree with you.
This is a common misconception. PLA plastic is only cannot be done at home and can only be done at what’s called a Materials Recovery Facility. Unfortunately, only 3% or less around the county even accepts PLA to compost the PLA plastic properly. So if you live close to one of the MRF’s you can decide to drop your PLA plastic to the side and drive it and drop it off to your local MRF.
If you don’t drop it off, it’s compacted in a garbage dump where it doesn’t get the oxygen it needs to properly and organically compost. Instead, it releases a lot of methane gas which eventually gets into the air and eats at the ozone.

Absolutely perfect analogy of these paper straws. Like sucking on newspaper. I just throw them away. There’s a novel eco idea… don’t give me a straw unless I ask for one.
One day I will roll a newspaper and drink soda out of it for an experiment. 🙂
