Check this out – Al Pastor Salad at Costco food court. Let me know if you tried it before. Did you like it? The only reason I didn’t try Al Pastor Salad is because of its high sodium content. My doctor said I need to watch sodium intake. I guess I can completely skip the dressing, but…
So… anyway… I will not eat it, you eat it and let me know. Haha..
What we know so far.
- It’s not vegan – The dressing contains eggs. You may eat without dressing.
- It has 3270 mg of sodium and 59 mg of fat
- That’s a lot of salt.
- FDA recommended daily sodium intake is less than 2300 mg
Nutritional facts can be found here.
https://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/calories/costco-food-court-al-pastor-salad-697591844
It’s $4.99. The sign says…
- Plant-based protein (soy)
- Chopped romaine
- Black beans and fresh vegetables
- Banh mi vegetables and dressing
- 330 – 750 cal.
It says 330 – 750 cal. If I make an educated guess, that means the dressing is 420 Calories and the salad alone is 330 Calories. Which I am not surprised about. It’s always dressings and tartar sauce that will do you in. Do not eat all the dressing,
Whole container has 1,660 calories, 118 carbs, 112 grams of fat, 64 grams of protein, and get this, 6,540 mg of sodium. According to this page.
https://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/calories/al-pastor-salad-709674587
After I noticed the sodium content after I bought it, I threw it out. 3270 mg of sodium is unconscionable. Thankfully Costco gave me a refund and I submitted a comment that they should list the sodium content on the wall poster.
Let’s dispense with the idea that this is a pro-health improvement. The level of sodium is ridiculous and soy is not a healthy protein (despite all the bad science pushed by the soy industry).
I hear this delish salad will be discontinued within the next month. Food court employee could not give me a reason why. ☹️
It is already discontinued where I live in Northern California. I bought one Saturday and went back to purchase another one today-no dice. Not that it makes a different now that it is going to be discontinued-1) the Al Pastor is in quotes, so you know something’s up 2)too spicy? Take out the red peppers 3)control dressing by dipping your forkful of salad into it
Since I bought it today in AZ, for the first time, I’d say your information is incorrect. It was fantastic, and being a larger man, I couldn’t even finish half of it, so you need to adjust any sodium/calories for the full salad which nobody can finish. It easily provides two meals.
True and now it’s fully vegan
Am I really the only one that could eat the entire thing by myself?!?!?! Iam 5’3” woman 147 lbs!! I guess I just have a big appetite ?
In one sitting I might add haha. Iam so sad it’s gone!!!! ?
Hahaha. 🙂
The salad is no more! I never get to taste it. Dang…
I love this salad! Just eat half now and half later and all your calorie/sodium worries will vanish 🙂
Or share it with your friend/spouse
No, fat for the salad before dressing is 12 grams. Dressing is 44 grams fat ( in 4 tbsp)
So, I like this salad. However, I do not use the dressing and I make it into 3 separate servings during the week. I use olive oil and red wine vinegar and I love it. But I cannot understand the sodium… that is a lot of salt but it does not taste THAT salty. Could this be a mistake?
I eat really low sodium and it does taste pretty dang salty to me
Terrible salad! Soy is not good not in this form. To much sodium. This is crap food.
I’m not vegan, never heard of “al pastor”, don’t like too much salt or spuce, and I’m not a huge fan of soy products. However, I decided to be adventurous and try this, dressing and all. It’s scrumptious! Only half was very filling, so I’ll have the rest for dinner. Definitely a healthier choice for overweight me who was gonna have a 750 calorie slice!
I tried the Al Pastor salad today I thought it was good although a little spicy for me. also I am a weight Watcher and could not find a point value for this salad.
I figured the point value based on the posted nutrition chart ( with dressing) and customer service call ( without dressing).
The point value for the salad without dressing is 9 points. But the sodium is 2,250 mg.
the point value for the whole container of dressing (4 tbsp) is 18 points!! with 1020 mg of sodium.
I ate half of the salad and used 1/2 tbsp dressing which came to 7 points. But that still has 1,125 mg of sodium.
This is from the figures they gave me and the weight watchers online food calculator.
Thanks for taking the time to calculate and post the points!
WW now posts 28 points for the salad with dressing.
My wife and i had one of these a couple of months ago. It’s terrible. Incredibly salty. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2300 mgs of sodium/day. This salad has 3270 mgs. Why doesn’t Costco have a low-fat or non-fat dressing for this? Like the Caesar Salad, the dressing for this salad more than doubles the total calorie count. A lot of fat, a lot of salt. It’s just bad all around. Costco thought the Polish Dog was too unhealthy, and this is what they came up with to replace it?
Concur. I try it today. This is too salty. Costco needs to evaluate item.
Couldn’t agree more. Very disappointing. If they’re going to call it al pastor, anyone would expect some pork flavor. Their hot dog is healthier than this!!
Yeah, NO. I tried it today, and it was awful. My co-worker ate some, she said same thing, also a healthy eater. Maybe our was bad? I am not a vegetarian, bit like to eat healthy. Unfortunately, I had to eat some beef jerky to get the nasty taste out of my mouth. 🙁
Count me happy. FINALLY something I want to eat at a Costco. You meat eaters still have the widest array of options, but now you also have a plant-based one. And I, vegetarian, have one option. And vegans can join in. Tasted good, felt healthy after eating. Happy. The açaí bowl was weak, clearly not açaí but a mix that’s rather tasteless. Still improvements for veggie me!
Nasty, how can they call it Al Pastor, when it doesn’t have Al Pastor in it. Where is the Al Pastor Pork!!!! Then adding Vietnamese Bahn Mi vegetables from a sandwich that usually has pork. Why the hatred of pork. The mystery soy crap tastes horrible. I really like dofu, but trying to make it meat just ruin’s tofu in this Mexican Vietnamese fusion of fake crap.
Theres hatred of pork because it is a level 1 carcinogen which means it is KNOWN to cause cancer. Besides how pork makes it to your plate, covered in feces and crammed into a pen that it can’t turn around in which then causes it to be infested with intestinal parasites. If you keep up with your love of pork, enjoy your worms!
Dang… welcome to my blog.
We have been eating Whole Food Plant Based for 10 months now, and found this salad (without the dressing) to be a no-brainer for the way we eat. We both love it and its a great quick meal on the go. Sadly in the northwest it will go away before winter…
I tried salad today and thought it was great. Per an interview with Costco in VegNews, the dressing is eggless.
https://vegnews.com/2018/7/costco-ditches-hot-dogs-to-make-room-for-vegan-options
I loved it, I’m glad Costco is going to more healthy options. Hoping that sodium number is a misprint, that’s an insane amount.
I thought it was totally delicious and very filling. Next time I’ll only allow myself half the dressing though.
This salad tastes pretty good, and is a lot for one serving. I only downed half. Then I checked the real nutrition info. Salt–egad! So much really disqualifies this as a “healthy” meal. Just being ‘vegetarian’ does not automatically mean its healthy.
Fat content also high. I did not use the dressing that came with it. Used my own lo-cal.
I will probably mix the rest of it with other lettuce/veg’s to make several meals and to dilute the salt and fat content. And yes, soy protein can create a lot of ‘gas’.
I just had the salad and I was not impressed! I am a very versatile eater and enjoy majority of food, but the dressing is to thick and tastes mayonaissey or something! I won’t be ordering it again.
Not worth the risk
https://www.breastcancer.org/research-news/soy-may-turn-on-genes-linked-to-cancer
That website is not a scientific website. They are sponsored by large companies that pay them to tell you what to think.
Please look up an actual scientific article. Soy does not cause cancer.
Safer risk than eating the loads of animal products that have been show to directly cause heart disease and obesity.
I don’t understand. Is the 330 calories for one “serving” which they do not define, or is it for the whole container? Because myfitnesspal has 1 container as an option and that calorie count is 1,660
Too much salt! Does do any favor for my Blood Pressure.
I thought it was great. Would have it again for sure
This salad is the best thing I’ve ever had! Seriously love it. I wish there were a vegan dressing option that tasted the same. Also curious to know if the seasoning is gluten-free.
The gluten issue is possible. After thoroughly enjoying this tasty treat of a salad, I had some mild digestive distress.
I will continue to buy this salad at costco, just hoping that it is really gluten-free.
This salad is not gluten free. The allergen info posted next to the ordering counter shows that this salad contains wheat.
I had a gluten attack after eating this salad. ?
I love a big salad but I only made it through about half of this. It was way too spicy, my mouth was on fire. I only tasted the dressing and it only intensified the heat. Won’t be getting this again.
The fitness pal is misleading for this meal. . They need to figure out the portions for this meal . Just by eyeballing it and without dressing it’s no more than 400 calories carbs around 20-30 same with protein . Fats are 10-15 due to the pork. Hope this helps . Next time I’m taking my food scale and weighing everything
There is no pork
Aloha I just had new salad at Costco in Kailua Kona. I loved it but too spicy for hubby.I kept telling him it was chicken. Great I’ll buy it again. Delicious!
It is wonderful and long overdue. Is it true that the dressing has egg in it? That’s disappointing. I love the kick in the salad.
Yuck! Bring back the bratwurst.
I thought it was delicious. I used less than half of the dressing. I will be eating this many times again.
I love this new salad!!
Tried the “Al Pastor” salad this past weekend. Couldn’t get past the first few bites. Several folks in our household shared that opinion. Worst $4.99 I have ever spent.
You must have had a bad salad because I could literally live on this thing!
I grab one of these every time I have a day off at the Costco in Ventura, CA. I usuallly park my car at Costco, grab one of these for dinner and an açaí bowl, and hop a bus to the beach (bus stop right next to the food court.)
I eat the açaí bowl on the bus ride to the beach and put the salad in an U.N. refrigerated beach locker till dinner time and it has never given me food poisoning or tasted off.
It is high time that Costco revamped their menu! I mean honestly, who eats hot dogs or pulled pork sandwiches these days? And before this Costco didn’t even have a vegetarian lunch option (if you ask for Italian dressing with this btw it becomes vegan.)
“I mean honestly, who eats hot dogs or pulled pork sandwiches these days?”
Uhm… you might be surprised at what people outside of Southern California eat.
I love hotdogs and all kinds of high calorie, fatty stuff.
Me too !
REally?
Costco sells an astounding number of hotdogs. Also there is a bacon and pork fest going on
If you’re a healthy person and looking for a healthy meal this is it. All you have to do use less or no dressing.
I am watching my carb and sugar intake.
Please, what is the nutritional breakdown MINUS the Dressing?
Thank you
Per fitness pal it says 53 grams of carbs . I don’t believe it since I’m pretty sure al pastor has more protein and fat since it’s a meat
No meat, it’s soy protein
yea I’m wondering the same thing. I can’t figure it out.
I love most salads of any kind, but this salad was disgusting. It’s too salty and you can taste the chemicals in the soy. The dressing is also a thick consistency and also super salty. Kuddos for Costco for trying to make a vegetarian dish, but this one is a flop.
flavorful but way too salty (gave me a salt headache after eating). Plant based protein (soy)tested like fake meat ( Cross between pork and chicken without satisfying after test). I think it would be good for vegetarian if it was not so salty. I would not have it again though.
Agreed – Too much salt !
What is the nutrition stats on the dressing and salad seperate?
Would be nice if you could lessen the sodium and replace with some spice.
I will double check (fact check) – because sodium content is out of this world. I almost want to tell people not to eat it. Sodium content is so high that I think maybe there is a mistake in nutritional facts.
I loved this! Really good salad. I had been saying how nice it would be if Costco had a vegan option on the Food Court menu and now they do, and it is wonderfully tasty!
I had it today and I thought it was delicious. I will definitely have it again!
I had the salad today. I didn’t use the dressing it just didn’t look healthy. Large portion but way to much salt makes it not heathy. To bad it could have been something I would eat at Costco.
I just had the Al Pastor salad and didn’t like it!I thought it was cool they came up with a new salad, but not this one! It is super spicy! The lady at the deli said the protein was a tofu. I felt the the strong spicy overpowered the fresh taste of the salad. Won’t ever have it again! I wish they would come up with a diabetic friendly salad, low carb and low salt.
What are the fresh veggies?
Mine had cucumbers and peppers. I actually loved this salad! It was much more of a filling salad than just a ton of lettuce and chicken and cheese.
On average, I eat 4 Al Pastor salads a week. Each salad represents about 2 meals for me…glad Costco brought it back… love it!
I just had the Al Pastor salad for lunch at the Oak Brook, IL location. Super tasty. I will definitely have it again.
Just had one for lunch today. Tasty, but, just found out, 3270 mg sodium! 59 mg fat! Never again. I thought this would be a healthier alternative of other items on the menu.
is that with dressing?
Love it. Had one today, this will be my lunch for a while
Carolyn J Houston, TX
Just had the Al Pastor salad in Costco Melville. It was delicious, has a little kick to it. Didn’t even use the dressing. Will continue buying it.
Just ordered one today and as a vegetarian really enjoyed it and appreciate a salad option at Costco. Huge portion for the money and tasty.
Is it gluten free and vegan?
Did u get a response to this question?
I asked about the dressing and they showed me the label. It was not vegan because it has eggs. I just eat it without the dressing and it was great. Not sure about gluten though.
Not gluten free, because of the soy
Soy does not contain gluten. Soy *sauce* does.
However the soy crumbles have a seasoning mix on them that might contain gluten?
I was just at Costco and they have the nutrients/allergen info posted on the wall next to where you order. The chart did show that this does contain wheat in it, but I am not sure which part has the wheat. I am guessing maybe it is part of a filler in the soy protein?
The new Al Pastor Salad is pretty good and rather spicy. A new taste for me so I am not sure if I like it enough to order it again.
Ate it today while my husband had a hot dog. I must not have read the description because we spent the next 1/2 hour trying to figure out the protein. It was delicious
But really spicy for me. I didn’t use the dressing at all and did not miss it. Huge portion that’s whe he ate it for his 2nd course. He had the dressing and liked it
Highly recommend it.
We have the Al Pastor salad in the Gig Harbor WA store now too. It is a large serving and its delicious! I would like to know what exactly the “soy protein” stuff is. I would buy it and use it other dishes. The server in the food court didn’t know.
I LOVE THIS SALAD! I wish I could get it without the onions – but it’s totally worth the five minutes it takes to sit there and pick them off!
If I had to guess I’d say the soy crumbles were like Beyond Beef or something like that. You can get those in the freezer section of most grocery stores and they are amazing!
It sayas 330 – 750 cal.
To me, that means the dressing is 420 Calories. Which I am not surprised. It’s always the dressing.
Yum! I loved it! Please make nutrition information available so we can log it into MyFitnessPal.
https://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/calories/costco-food-court-al-pastor-salad-697591844
Had this today in Minnesota. So good. Huge portion and I only needed a quarter of the dressing, if that.
The “meat” was super flavorful.
So glad to have something that is green and tasty.
Meat? I thought its veg
Not meat, but “Meat” with quotation marks.
It has plant based protein (soy)
Where did you have it in MN? I was at the SLP store the other day, and didn’t see it at the food court– I’d love to try it!
Does anyone know the type or dressing they use because it is delicious!
Nutrition facts?
I am trying it now and I gotta say. It’s better than most high end price restaurants. It’s deicious?. It’s a lot and it’s the perfect price.
Costco’s pizza, hotdogs and sandwiches are delicious for sure. The yogurt and churros are pretty darn good too. But, Costco has fallen short on healthy options. Let’s face it, the Caesar salad was/is not very palatable. I was very happy to see their new salad, AlPastor on the menu. Use a small portion of the dressing aND it life fat, low cholesterol, low carb. Voila. Good job Costco!
Delicious & supposedly healthy. For the first time I had it @ Costco, Milford, CT. I’ll continue to eat this each time I come here. Thanks Costco for this choice!
I just found this at the Costco in Springfield VA. Normally there isn’t any thing that I can eat on a plant based diet
It taste so good and I’m not sure what the soy protein is but it taste like chicken both emotionally and i will buy it every time i am in Costco. Plus its more than a generous portion, along with an ample amount of dressing. I consider the dressing my treat and I don’t worry about the calories. So if it was rated by stars, I would give it 5 stars and I am loving it.
Thank you Costco for giving us healthy options in the food court.
A grateful recovering high saturated fat, overweight, diabetic, high cholesterol, and peripheral artery disease, looking into the abyss, if I don’t make changes in my lifestyle and diet.
Love its!
I had it today and it was
I had it today and it was delicious. Split it with my wife as it is quite large.
Our location still has the
Our location still has the polish dog AND the new al pastor salad!
Very delicious and tasty ,
Very delicious and tasty , with a bit of spicy kick to it . And it’s healthy! Hope Costco keeps this item Co it’s way better than the Caesar dressing.
Hahaha
Hahaha
ah- hahaha. Now I must try it.
The salad tasted great, but
The salad tasted great, but you pay for it later with bad gas!!! Too much plant-based goodness for my GI to handle. Wife is now banning me from eating it again!
Oh, good.. Thank you for
Oh, good.. Thank you for letting us know.
Now I gots to try it.
Just had the Al Pastor salad
Just had the Al Pastor salad at Costco in Paradise Valley. It was really delicious. It is healthy and nothing had to die, since its high quality soy protein.
WHAT ????????????
WHAT ???????
It can be regional thing. I know different locations carry different menu. I will check and let you know if my locations stopped carrying Polish as well.
Oh boy…
They replaced the Polish dog
They replaced the Polish dog with this….why oh why would you do such a thing. On principle alone this is a crime.
Some places still have the polish dog!!
polish dog replaced by chili and now they added al pastor salad
should have left polish dog and got rid of hot dog
Ahhh~~ * Thank you for
Ahhh~~ * Thank you for letting us know, Toa. Now I am excited.
Yes, it's the dressing that adds huge amount of calories. I do exactly what you do. I use half of dressing (in case of chicken Caesar salad).
Have a nice day, Toa. Talk to you soon.
Just had it. It’s really
Just had it. It’s really delicious. You can’t even tell it’s soy. I’m not the type you described- I love my meat! But it’s really flavorful and MUCH better than the Cesar salad. The dressing is a whopping 420 calories, however. I used half and it was enough for me. Highly recommend.
do u know if it’s 59 grams of fat before or after the dressing
It’s 12 g fat for the salad, 44g for the dressing.
